
HISTORY
The experience of De Jorio Design started in the era of Ocean Liners, and then established itself in Cruise Vessels, Cruise Ferries and Yacht Design products. The architect Giuseppe de Jorio started working on the design of passenger ships as long ago as the early '60s, joined since '80s years by Vittorio de Jorio and Marco de Jorio marking the prospective line of the new generation in terms of creativity and management. From 1964 to 1975 he was consultant of the Flotta Lauro , British Railways, Trans Méditerrané de Navigation and the Canguri Company. From 1978 to 1994, De Jorio Design was leading consultant of the Costa Crociere group.
In the same period De Jorio was involved in the designing of ferryboats, fishing boats and other operational vessels. Meanwhile the studio’s professional activity continued in the pleasure-craft field and several vessels were built in the most important boatyards of both Italy and abroad.
In 1975 Giuseppe de Jorio received the prestigious Lloyd's Trophy for the design of the Mohamedia, a 48-metre luxury yacht, built for the Arabian Financier Adnan Kashoggi for whom, a few years later, he carried out the general arrangement for the mythical Nabila. After these, several yachts were designed amongst which the 85’ schooner Stalca II for Prince Ranieri of Monaco, the 64 m Luisella now Maria Alexandra, built by Codecasa shipyards, the splendid 51 m unit Blue Shadow built by the Lurssen Yards of Bremen and many others. The latest plans concern the 64 m yacht El Bravo, launched at Pietra Ligure in 1991 and refitted in 2000, now Shahnaz; the designing of Sunrise(1992), a unique catamaran – with three decks 38 m in length, 11 m breadth - which is a real and proper night club/panoramic restaurant.
Over the last ten years De Jorio Design has put its name to the whole architectonic project of the Grandi Navi Veloci: the Majestic (1993), Splendid (1994) Fantastic (1996), Excellent (1998), Victory (1999), Excelsior (1999), La Superba, (2002), and La Suprema (2003) that represent today the reference point for the world market of Cruise Ferries..
For the architectural design of the m/v La Superba Studio de Jorio was awarded the prestigious recognition of the Shippax Award 2003.
The studio is also responsible for the design of the 4 new high-speed, new generation, cruise ferries built by Fincantieri for the Greek company Minoan Lines: Knossos Palace, Festos Palace (2001), Olympia Palace (2001) and Europa Palace (2002), ships that now reach a speed of 29 knots. For the architectural design of the m/v Knossos Palace Studio de Jorio was awarded the prestigious Cruise & Ferry Award 2001. The latest new vessels for Tirrenia have also been designed by De Jorio Design: Vincenzo Florio (2000), Raffaele Rubattino (2001), Bithia (2001) Janas (2002), Athara (2003) Nuraghes (2004) and Sharden (2005).
For Tirrenia, the company has also carried out the interior design and decoration of 9 fast ferries of which the most prestigious are the Jupiter 3000 MDV series from Fincantieri: Aries, Taurus, Scorpio and Capricorn.
Now De Jorio Design International is involved in the project of the new cruise ferry of Grimaldi Group, Cruise Roma built by Fincantieri and delivered in spring 2008, and in the ferry cruise for Grimaldi Holding, M/N Coraggio (2007), M/N Audacia (2007), M/N Tenacia (2008), M/N Forza (2008).
The year 2003 and 2004 saw the delivery of the two sister cruise vessels, MSC Lirica and MSC Opera which the De Jorio has designed for MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Cruises) and which were built at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique. In the same shipyard MSC Musicaand MSC Orchestra were also built, a completely new project designed by DE JORIO DESIGN INTERNATIONAL for MSC CROCIERE.
NEW PROJECTS
The De Jorio name will also be borne by the next cruise vessels of MSC, MSC Poesia and her two sister ships MSC Fantasia and MSC Splendida, super Panamax ships with a completely new concept of design, that will be delivered in 2008/2009.
Finally, the studio was chosen by the Italian Navy and by Fincantieri for the design of all the public spaces (lounges, entertainment areas and restaurants), crew and officer quarters on the new aircraft carrier, Conte di Cavour which was delivered in 2007.
